NOTE
Only draw blood from NEW cannula at time of insertion
Prep
- Label tubes with patient details
- Know order of draw
- Have vacutainer ready
Execute
- Insert cannula, get flashback
- Remove needle to sharps
- Attach vacutainer to cannula hub
- Insert tubes in order:
- Blood cultures (if needed)
- Blue (citrate)
- Red/yellow (serum)
- Green (lithium heparin)
- Purple (EDTA)
- Fill to black line
CAUTION
Don't overfill or underfill coagulation tubes
Finish
- Remove vacutainer to sharps
- Flush cannula with saline
- Secure with dressing
- Date the cannula
