Prep
- Consent patient
- Gather: IV kit, bung, 10mL saline flush, syringe
- Tourniquet → select vein (start distal)
- Hand hygiene, gloves
- Clean site (chlorhexidine, let dry)
Execute
- Anchor skin distal to site
- Insert 30°, bevel up
- Flashback → drop to 5-10° → advance cannula
- Release tourniquet
- Occlude vein, withdraw needle → sharps
CAUTION
Dispose of sharps immediately. Never recap.
- Attach bung (activate port valve)
Finish
- Secure with transparent dressing
- Flush with saline
- Check for pain/swelling (extravasation)
