Prep
- Check fluid order (type, volume, rate)
- Check expiry date
- Two-person check
- Label line with blue sticker
Execute
- Close roller clamp (near drip chamber)
- Remove flask seal
- Spike flask firmly
- Squeeze drip chamber to half-fill
- Open clamp slowly, prime line
CAUTION
Rapid priming creates air bubbles
- Remove air bubbles
- Attach to cannula (aseptic technique)
- Set drip rate
Finish
- Check site for extravasation
- Document start time and rate
- Patient education (may feel cold)
