What Assessors Look For

Understanding of GA components (hypnosis, analgesia, relaxation)
Appropriate drug choices for induction and maintenance
Knowledge of common anaesthetic drugs and their effects
Airway management plan
Post-operative plan

Key Points to Demonstrate

1GA components: amnesia, analgesia, muscle relaxation, autonomic control
2Induction agents: propofol (most common), thiopentone, ketamine
3Maintenance: volatile (sevoflurane) or TIVA (propofol infusion)
4Analgesia: opioids (fentanyl, morphine), paracetamol, local/regional
5Muscle relaxation: suxamethonium (depolarizing), rocuronium (non-depolarizing)
6Airway: LMA vs ETT - depends on procedure, patient, positioning

Tips for Success

  • 💡Ask the anaesthetist to explain their drug choices for each case
  • 💡Follow a case from pre-op to recovery to see the full picture
  • 💡Understand why different patients need different approaches
